Anti-democratic positions that reject fundamental principles of equality and/or the rule of law are becoming (more) acceptable. Universities are not spared from this either. And it is to be expected that teaching and public events in particular (but also other areas) will be affected by self-confident anti-democratic agitation in the future.

To prevent such positions from normalising as legitimate discourse positions, it is important to counter them - which is not easy.

Even the vague concern of academics about being attacked for their positions or not complying with a supposed ‚neutrality requirement‘ can lead to restrictions and thus threaten academic freedom.

So far, universities have hardly responded to this challenging situation. There has been a lack of further education programmes and concepts that focus clearly on protection against anti-democratic agitation and personal hostility in the context of teaching or public events (see also the statement "Protecting academic freedom: Strategies against anti-democratic forces" by Die Junge Akademie; in German only).

The project aims to fill this gap by

  • pooling existing expertise
  • developing possible courses of action against anti-democratic agitation in the university environment and
  • passing on the knowledge acquired.

18.06.2025: Information and exchange event "Between tolerance limits and need for action"

The project group "Countering anti-democratic agitation" is offering an internal departmental event at the University of Koblenz on the topic "Between tolerance limits and the need for action: radicalisation and conspiracy theories in teaching - act correctly!"

Speakers

  • M. Sc. Moritz Streng on the topic of conspiracy theories as a radicalisation factor in education: Conspiracy theories are more than just fake news - they form a closed world view with real consequences: for individuals, for social discourse and for teachers. The lecture offers a definitional clarification, shows examples of radicalisation paths and attempts to provide initial impetus for difficult but necessary strategies for dealing with radicalisation in the teaching context.
  • Dr Sandro Corrieri on the topic of the limits of tolerance in the university environment and democratic scope for action: ‘Radical thinking takes many forms, all of which must have their place in a pluralised, democratic society. However, the limits of tolerance need a reliable framework in order to justify the ability of institutions to act. This also applies to the university, especially where multipliers in the education system are sensitised. So what is radicalisation, where does it leave the realm of tolerance and in which arenas does the battle for sovereignty of definition take place and with which strategies?

Following the impulses, the organisers would like to share experiences with the participants and collect concrete needs. The aim is to develop customised support services for teaching and studying in dealing with anti-democratic tendencies.
