Blog
Die Junge Akademie hosted the meeting of the European National Young Academies from May 22 to 23, 2024. Representatives from 22 institutions travelled to Berlin.
In 2024, the Die Junge Akademie and the Global Young Academy (GYA) jointly hosted the European Young Academies (ENYA) meeting in Berlin. The meeting took place from May 22-23, 2024 under the theme "European Research Collaboration in a Shifting Geopolitical Landscape” at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. In total, representatives from 22 young academies travelled to Berlin.
Birgit Nemec, member of the Board of Die Junge Akademie, opened the event together with Markus Prutsch, GYA Executive Committee Member. During a brief exchange, the delegates gave insights into the background and working methods of their respective young academies.
Representatives from Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and the GYA presented current projects at their respective academies. These included collaborations in the fields of science and art or diplomacy. Insights into science policy engagement and analyses of the role of young scientists during the Covid-19 pandemic were also provided.
In a subsequent panel, those present discussed the opportunities and challenges faced by the young academies. It was emphasised that the young academies can provide important impetus to established scientific networks. The delegates saw the scarcity of time and financial resources as well as the question of independence as challenges. There was a lively discussion on the question of how young scientists can become more involved in policy advice and how interested individuals can be empowered to take on this role competently—both at national level and in joint European structures.
Following the discussion, ENYA and ALLEA delegates offered workshops on the topics of Science Activism, Internationalisation, Multi-perspective Science Advice, Reforming Research Assessment, thus concluding the first day of the meeting.
On the second day, the delegates were able to exchange ideas in SAPEA workshops on the topic of "Academy interactions for better policy advice".
The Swiss Young Academy will host the ENYA meeting in 2025.
