The Board of Die Junge Akademie strongly supports the call of the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany for more objectivity in crises.
With this, the members of Die Junge Akademie's Board react to the coverage of the BILD-Zeitung of 4.12.2021, in which the newspaper held scientists responsible for political measures.
When scientists' results are being criticised - which is common in science journalism - this should be done based on essential, self-evident standards such as mutual respect and without personal attacks.
In the view of the members of the Board, a behaviour as seen by BILD-Zeitung undermines the freedom of science guaranteed by the German constitution and is defamatory to scientists who contribute to science-based policy advice with their work.
The Board of Die Junge Akademie joins the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany in its call for fact-based journalism and objectivity in discussion and reporting Also, it appeals to the responsibility of the media to respect and protect basic democratic principles.
