Press Release

06.05.24

ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, is pleased to announce its upcoming General Assembly in Berlin, Germany, on 22–23 May 2024, marking the organisation's 30th anniversary. The event will be co-hosted by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities, and the Junge Akademie.

The highlight of this year’s General Assembly is the public symposium ‘European Research Collaboration in a Shifting Geopolitical Landscape’ on 22 May 22, 18:30-20:30 CEST, followed by a reception to celebrate 30 years of ALLEA. The event will take place at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The symposium will feature a keynote address by Professor Fabiola Gianotti, Director-General of CERN and recipient of the 2023 ALLEA Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values.

Following the keynote, a high-level panel discussion comprising experts such as Katja Becker, president of the German Research Foundation DFG, and others from academia and policy will discuss the challenges and opportunities of open research collaboration in today's rapidly changing geopolitical environment.

Key questions include:

  • What role does research collaboration play in the global context?
  • Can research collaboration across borders promote peace and prosperity?
  • What are the limits to open research collaboration amid geopolitical complexities?
  • How can open collaborations be strengthened while upholding standards of academic freedom and research integrity?

The event is open to the public and free of charge, providing an opportunity for international, interdisciplinary, and cross-sectoral dialogue. Registrationis requested. For those unable to attend in person, an online livestream will be available.

In addition to the public symposium, ALLEA Member Academies and the European National Young Academies (ENYA) will jointly convene their annual internal business meetings on the morning of 22 May 2024, addressing governance, strategy, and policy matters.
