Division of Applied Mechanics
TU Braunschweig

The Division of Applied Mechanics studies how materials and structures behave, degrade, and can be improved to become more durable and sustainable. The team members combine experiments, computer simulations, and modern data-driven methods, to better understand processes such as material failure, transport of fluids and chemical agents through multiphase materials and novel manufacturing techniques, like 3D printing. The team is small, international, and works in an open, English-speaking environment with strong, empathetic leadership that promotes trust, flexibility, and individual development.
Strengths of the research environment
-
Internationality in everyday life
Using English as the common working language makes the team open, approachable and attractive to researchers from different countries and academic backgrounds, also by offering dual degrees with different countries such as Sweden and Brazil. -
Excellent research in a supportive environment
High academic standards go hand in hand with a management culture that takes individual needs, life circumstances and career stages into account. -
Support tailored to the individual
Regular discussions, open feedback and targeted support with publications, grant applications, conferences and networking accompany individual development. -
A team culture that fosters creativity
Structured group meetings and informal exchanges create space for ideas, collaborative problem-solving and genuine cooperation. -
Trust, diversity and a willingness to learn
Successes are celebrated together, different perspectives are actively incorporated, and challenges are understood as part of a productive research process.
Examples
-
Flexible and open working structures
Rather than enforcing rigid structures, researchers are encouraged to define how, when, and where they work most effectively, in close dialogue with the group leader. This trust-based model increases productivity, job satisfaction, and long-term commitment, while reducing stress and hierarchical barriers. -
Empowering leadership philosophy
In the research environment, academic leadership is actively combined with emotional intelligence, creating an environment in which researchers feel genuinely seen and supported as individuals. This holistic approach – integrating academic excellence, personal well-being and career development – is not only rare but also a key factor in the sustained success and attractiveness of the research environment, particularly for international and early-career researchers.
