Kompost Ensemble e. V.

Sixteen adults are standing in a garden next to rows of leafy vegetables and flowering plants. A person in the middle raises an arm as if to point at something. Behind the group are a small wooden shed with a red tiled roof, a white greenhouse, trees and two-storey houses nearby.

The Kompost Ensemble e.V. explores emancipatory ruralities. Art-based methods such as workshops, tea times and bicycle tours, create spaces for mutual exchange and learning. What unites those involved is the tension between criticism and appreciation of local structures and practices. The central question is: How can rural life be conceived differently - without romanticisation and deficit discourse? The interdisciplinary research environment enables solidarity-based working methods and expand the horizons of critical social sciences. Several members of the non-profit association, which aims to promote science, supervise dissertations as part of their roles at various universities.

Strengths of the research environment

  • Research, practice and knowledge transfer integrated
The Kompost Ensemble combines academic work with artistic, social and practical formats.

  • Learning within a peer network
Rather than rigid hierarchies, collaboration is characterised by collegial consultation, joint decision-making and mutual feedback – transcending disciplinary boundaries.

  • Taking on responsibility early on
Members contribute their own ideas, help lead projects and gain early experience in organisation, facilitation and leadership.

  • Space for experimental methods
Workshops, walks, bike rides or artistic formats open up new approaches to research and collaboration.

  • Connected and visible
The Kompost Ensemble extends its reach beyond academia – into practice, the public sphere and policy debates.
