Around 50 people are standing in four rows on a lawn in front of a low brick building and trees with autumn foliage. They are dressed casually, and some are kneeling in front of it. The ground is strewn with fallen leaves, and in the background you can see dense deciduous trees.

The Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) is a research institute located in Oldenburg. It was founded in 2017. The institute researches marine biodiversity and its importance for the function of marine ecosystems. In doing so, it develops the scientific basis for marine nature conservation and ecosystem management. The HIFMB works together in a interdisciplinary team of over 80 employees from 17 different countries.

Strengths of the research environment

  • Reliable support, even for personal matters
The "Persons of Trust" team provides an accessible point of contact for advice, personal concerns and conflict resolution.

  • Interdisciplinary career support for postdocs
The HIFMB Integrative Postdoc Pool (HIPP) brings together several postdocs from different groups to work on a shared research topic, thereby fostering both professional and collegial support. Interdisciplinary interactions are particularly encouraged within the HIPP cohort.

  • Visibility and exchange in everyday institute life
A fortnightly seminar series highlights the breadth of research at the institute whilst offering a safe space to develop presentation skills.

  • Space for bottom-up initiatives
Postdocs organise their own exchange formats, including a monthly postdoc meeting and a Grant-Writing School with regular writing support and advice from group leaders.

  • Respectful and inclusive culture
The Social and Cultural Contract has a noticeable impact on interactions within the institute; this is complemented by an annual survey of early-career researchers, as well as inclusive facilities such as gender-neutral toilets, a breastfeeding and relaxation room, and flexible workspaces.

  • Community beyond research
Initiatives such as the Social Board, Question of the Week, games evenings and the institute’s volleyball team foster interaction, a sense of belonging and work-life balance.

Examples

  • Fostering an open, diverse and innovative working environment
The high level of professional and international diversity at HIFMB creates a particularly stimulating working environment in which innovation, curiosity and exploration are actively encouraged. Regular thematic and cultural exchanges between members of the institute are actively supported through initiatives such as Fika coffee breaks, shared lunches and an open-door policy.

  • Strengthening institute-wide collaboration through creative community initiatives
With the ‘HIFMB Seasons’ initiative, the institute exemplifies how collaborative development can be actively shaped. Thematic formats such as the "Winter of Dialogue", which specifically encourages exchange with colleagues one is less familiar with, strengthen institute-wide cohesion, stimulate new perspectives and foster an open culture of communication.
